For the Hamburger Patties:
For the Gravy:
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 medium onion, sliced thin
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 ½ cups beef broth, or stock
- Salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste
- 8 oz sliced baby Bella mushrooms
Patties: Using a medium size bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, A1 steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, steak seasoning, garlic and onion powder. Using your hands (I wear gloves), mix all the ingredients together. Form 4 round patties about ¾ to 1” thick.
Add the butter to a medium size skillet over medium heat. Once the butter is melted, add the patties to the skillet. Cook for 5 minutes on each side, until cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set on a plate. Cover the plate with foil, or a lid, to keep warm.
Gravy: If there is more than a tablespoon of grease leftover from the hamburger meat, use a spoon and discard the extra grease until you are left with about 1 tablespoon. Do not clean the skillet, you want the pan drippings for the gravy.
Add the butter in the skillet and use a spoon to scrape up all the bits and pieces from the bottom of the skillet. Add the onions and cook for 5 minutes, until translucent.
Add the flour and stir the flour into the butter and onions. Cook the flour for about 2 minutes, until lightly browned.
While stirring, add the broth, stirring until all the flour is mixed into the broth. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring often, until it begins to thicken. Season with salt and pepper, making sure to taste as you season.
Add the mushrooms and cooked patties back to the skillet and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 7 to 10 minutes, until the mushrooms are tender and the gravy is thick.
Serve with mashed potatoes, over rice, or with your favorite vegetables. And it is always a great idea to have some warm bread to devour the gravy with.
Storage: Cool the meat and gravy down, and then place both together in an airtight container. Store the leftovers in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Reheating: Reheat your salisbury steak and gravy in the microwave, or in a skillet on the stovetop. We recommend adding a little broth to the gravy when reheating
Freeze: Cool down both the meat and the gravy, and package them together in an airtight container, or a freezer bag. Mark with the date, and freeze for up to three months. For best results, thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating it.
Prep Ahead: You can prepare the hamburger patties for this recipe up to 2 days before. Just store them in an airtight container in the fridge until you are ready to cook.
Make Ahead: If you like, you can also cook Salisbury steak a little ahead of time, and leave it on the stove over very low heat, stirring occasionally. (We recommend adding a little extra broth to your gravy if you plan on doing this, so it won’t dry out.) We have done this when having guests over many times!
