Ellen’s Notes

This creamy French Market Chicken is an old-school recipe from back in the 90’s! My friend Shannon made it and I knew I had to get my hands on that recipe. It’s been in our family’s regular dinner rotation ever since.

It’s inexpensive, easy as can be, and the decadent sauce has a unique flavor that truly makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The addition of white wine is what really sends this sauce over the top, giving it an elevated flavor.

As far as crockpot recipes go, this is up there on the top of my favorites list. It’s the very definition of tried and true!

Ingredients for crockpot French Market chicken: raw chicken breasts on parchment, a bowl of canned golden mushroom soup, a small glass of white wine, several cubes of butter, a bowl of chive and onion cream cheese, and Italian seasoning mix on a wooden table.

Ingredient Notes

Find the full printable recipe with specific measurements below.

  • Chicken: You can use chicken breasts or thighs, but make sure they are boneless and skinless. If using frozen chicken breasts, you’ll need to add an extra hour of cook time.
  • Golden Mushroom Soup: This is a little different from your usual condensed mushroom soup! It’s got a beef and tomato base that adds a ton of savory depth.
  • Chive and Onion Cream Cheese: If you use plain cream cheese, make sure to add in a handful of chopped fresh chives. Otherwise, you’ll be missing out on a ton of herby flavor!
  • Italian Seasoning Mix: This is found in the salad dressing section of the grocery store, near things like the dry ranch seasoning packets.
  • White Wine: A dry white wine like Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, or Chardonnay works great. You do not want to use a sweet wine in this recipe. You can substitute the wine with chicken stock, if needed. However, the wine really adds the most amazing flavor!

Tips For Making Crockpot French Market Chicken

One of the best things about this recipe is how fast it comes together – with just 5 minutes of prep! Scroll down to the printable recipe card for full instructions.

Let the cream cheese come to room temperature, if you have the time. While you do microwave it, letting it soften before will help it blend more easily with the soup and butter.

Make the sauce before adding it to the crockpot. It’s important to stir the sauce ingredients together, in a separate bowl, before pouring it over the chicken.

Shred the chicken or leave it whole. It’s totally up to you and your preference, it’s truly delicious either way. If you choose to shred it, just use two forks and shred it in the crockpot with the sauce.

If you want to prep ahead, whisk the sauce together the night before. Store it in the fridge in an airtight container. The next morning, reheat it in the microwave, whisking it once more until smooth and well combined. Then just pour it over the chicken and hit start.

Cooking for a crowd? This recipe easily doubles! Just be sure your crockpot is big enough, and plan to add an extra hour of cook time if needed.

Storing and Reheating

Let the leftover chicken fully cool to room temperature prior to storing in an airtight container in the fridge. It’ll keep for up to 4 days.

Reheat in the microwave in intervals, about 30 seconds at a time, stirring often, until warmed all the way through. If it’s dried out a little, you can always add a little butter, or a splash of milk or broth, to refresh the sauce.

Serving Suggestions

You’re going to want to serve it with something to help soak up all of that luscious creamy sauce! Mashed potatoes are usually what I serve it with, but rice or pasta also works great.

A sprinkle of fresh chopped chives on top does wonders to finish it off. You also can’t go wrong with crusty garlic bread and roasted broccoli on the side.
