Key Ingredients
Below you will find helpful notes for key ingredients used to make the best easy crockpot steak and potatoes recipe. Scroll down to the recipe card below for the full ingredient list and exact amounts!
- Steak: We usually use a large top sirloin boneless steak for this recipe. There’s no need for an expensive cut of steak – the slow cooker will help tenderize it!
- Onion: A yellow onion is our favorite to use because it has a natural sweetness. A white onion will also work well.
- Russet Potatoes: Make sure to cut these into large cubes! If they’re too small, they’ll turn to mush in the mixture. You can also use a bag of baby potatoes, no peeling needed, just add them to the pot.
- Worcestershire Sauce: Just a little splash will add a ton of flavor to your gravy, don’t skip this ingredient!
How to Make Crockpot Steak and Potatoes
This one-pot wonder is a favorite dinner recipe in our homes. It’s one of those amazing set-it-and-forget-it crockpot recipes without a lot of effort needed! Below is a quick recipe overview, but please scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post for full instructions.
- Add onions and steak: Add half of the sliced onions, steak, and Worcestershire sauce to the crockpot.
- Thicken the gravy: Whisk together the cornstarch and beef stock. Pour over the steak.
- Add final ingredients: Toss in the garlic, potatoes, and the remaining onions. Sprinkle everything with all of your seasonings.
- Cook: Cook on low for 7 to 8 hours or on high for 4 to 6 hours. For the most tender results, we recommend going with the low and slow cook time versus quicker cook time!
- Serve and Enjoy: When you’re ready to serve, gently stir the gravy in the slow cooker to coat everything and then dig in!
Cook’s Tips & Variations
- Slice the onions: We like to slice the onions rather than dicing them as they keep more texture that way. Placing some onions under the steak and the rest on top helps to evenly distribute the flavor.
- Tenderize the steak: If you’re worried about the cut of steak being a little tough, you can use a tenderizer to pound it out a bit before adding to the slow cooker.
- No need to sear: We’ve tried searing the steak prior to slow cooking it and did not notice a difference. Why dirty up a dish if you don’t need to?
- Add veggies: Feel free to toss in chopped carrots or parsnips, sliced mushrooms, or even try swapping the russet potatoes with sweet potatoes!
What to Serve with Crockpot Steak
- Bread: Crusty bread is always great at soaking up any gravy that gets left behind! You could always go the extra mile with something flavorful like cheesy herb crescent rolls.
- Salad: Brighten up your plate with something fresh like our cucumber salad or try a shaved brussels sprouts salad.
- Veggies: Compliment your hearty dinner with some sautéed mushrooms or roasted green beans. You also can’t go wrong with these honey glazed carrots!
Make Ahead, Storing, Reheating and Freezing
- Make-Ahead: Assemble all the ingredients in the crockpot liner the night before and refrigerate. In the morning, pop it into the slow cooker and start cooking.
- Storing: Store the cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Reheating: Warm leftovers slowly on the stove or microwave in short intervals, stirring to maintain the gravy’s texture. If your gravy is too thick, add a splash of broth as needed.
- Freezing: Portion the cooled leftovers into freezer-safe containers and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
