Key Ingredients
Below you will find helpful notes for key ingredients used to make this recipe for honey garlic shrimp with broccoli. Scroll down to the recipe card below for the full ingredient list and exact amounts!
- Shrimp: You can certainly use frozen shrimp. Just make sure they’re fully thawed prior to marinating and cooking.
- Broccoli: We prefer using fresh, not frozen broccoli for this recipe as it holds its texture better for the sauce to cling to. Frozen broccoli tends to end up a little mushier.
- Sesame Oil: Regular or toasted sesame oil adds a great depth of flavor. You can swap it for another high-heat cooking oil, but we highly recommend keeping a bottle in your pantry for dishes like this!
- Garlic: We know it’s tempting to used jarred garlic, but it just does not have that same potent flavor you get from mincing fresh garlic. If you want a sauce that pops, make sure to use fresh garlic!
- Soy Sauce: You can swap this with coconut aminos or tamari for a gluten free option, if preferred.
- Ginger: Freshly grated ginger will add more of a bold flavor, but ground ginger also works in a pinch. It’s what we tend to use most often as we always have it on hand!
How to Make Honey Garlic Shrimp with Broccoli
Below is a quick recipe overview show you how truly simple it is to make this honey garlic shrimp with broccoli! If you have a little extra time, let the shrimp marinate in the sauce for up to 20-minutes before cooking for even deeper flavor. Please scroll down to the recipe card for full printable instructions.
- Make the Marinade: Whisk together the honey, soy sauce, some of the sesame oil, garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes, and cornstarch. Remove half a cup of it and set aside.
- Marinate the Shrimp: Add the shrimp to the bowl and toss to make sure they’re all coated.
- Cook the Broccoli: Add sesame oil to a skillet and cook the broccoli until softened. Be careful not to overcook it – it’ll keep cooking once the shrimp are added!
- Cook the Shrimp: Scoop the shrimp from the bowl and add them to the skillet, tossing any leftover marinade. Cook, stirring often, until the shrimp are cooked, turning pink, and slightly curled.
- Make the Sauce: Add the half cup of reserved marinade and cook until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy, perfectly sticking to the shrimp and veggies!
Cook’s Tips & Variations
- Don’t Overcook: If you cook the broccoli, it’ll become mushy. The shrimp are fully cooked once they’re opaque and shaped like a C. If you overcook them, they’ll turn tough and rubbery.
- Add More Veggies: Mushrooms, bell peppers, and baby corn are all tasty add-ins. You can also grab a bag of stir-fry veggies to mix in!
- More Heat: Add more or less red pepper flakes to control the amount of heat in your marinade. We also occasionally add Sriracha when we are craving spicy!
- Different Proteins: You can use any cubed protein you like – from chicken, to tofu, or even salmon.
- Optional Toppings: Sesame seeds and chopped green onions both add texture and flavor.
Honey Garlic Shrimp with Broccoli
Ingredients
- ½ cup honey
- ⅓ cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 4 tablespoons sesame oil, divided
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger, or 1 teaspoon fresh grated
- ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, or sriracha
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 3 cups broccoli florets
- 1 small onion, sliced
Instructions
- In a medium size bowl, whisk to combine the honey, soy sauce, 2 tablespoons sesame oil, garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes, and cornstarch. Reserve a ½ cup of the marinade and set aside.
- Add the shrimp to the bowl, toss to coat, and set aside. Stir occasionally to evenly coat them in the sauce.
- While the shrimp are marinating, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of sesame oil to a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Cook the broccoli and onions for about 10-minutes, just until the broccoli is starting to become tender. Try not to overcook the broccoli – remember it is going to continue cooking with the shrimp!
- Scoop the shrimp out of the marinade and place them in the skillet with the broccoli. Discard the leftover marinade. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Once the shrimp start to curl and turn pink (after about 2 minutes), add in the ½ cup of the reserved marinade, stirring until the shrimp and broccoli are well coated. Cook for 2 to3 minutes more, just until the sauce has thickened and shrimp are cooked through. Serve immediately over rice, noodles, or with a side salad.
Notes
- Store: Transfer any leftover Honey Garlic Shrimp to an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Reheating: For best results, reheat gently in a skillet over low heat, adding a splash of water to loosen the sauce if needed. Avoid microwaving, as shrimp can become rubbery quickly!
