Cook’s Tips and Variation Ideas

This is a great basic cabbage recipe to make in so many different ways!

  • How to Cut Cabbage: Start by removing the large tough outer leaves. Then, cut the cabbage in half and remove the stem. Discard the core (it’s too tough to eat), rinse the cabbage, and then chop it into large pieces. We like bigger pieces in this cabbage recipe so they have a little crunch after cooking.
  • Add Tomatoes: Add a can of well-drained diced tomatoes or Rotel (canned tomatoes and green chiles) to the crockpot before cooking.
  • Add Potatoes: Like in our skillet cabbage, potatoes and sausage, diced potatoes would be a great addition to this crockpot cabbage recipe. Cut the potatoes into bite sized pieces so they cook through in time.
  • Change Up Seasonings: Try a teaspoon of cajun seasoning in place of the garlic powder and salt. The sky is the limit here, you can use any seasonings your heart desires.
  • Add Protein: You can easily turn this side dish into a full dinner by adding a protein like in our fried cabbage and sausage! Add ham, sautéed chopped bacon, browned ground beef or cooked sliced sausage to the crockpot with raw cabbage.

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

  • Fridge: Leftover cabbage stores great in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat: Transfer a serving to a plate and microwave in 30 second intervals, until warmed through. For large amounts, reheat in a skillet over medium-heat.
  • Freeze: Cabbage can loose some of it’s crisp texture after freezing, but will still taste good. Transfer cooled cabbage to a freezer safe airtight container. Freeze for up to 3 months. Transfer to fridge to thaw before reheating.
