What’s In Burger Seasoning?
You likely already have all the seasonings needed for this homemade hamburger seasoning on hand! Scroll down to the recipe card for exact amounts.
- Paprika: We use smoked paprika, for the smoky taste, but regular or hot paprika will also work.
- Minced Onion: Dried minced onion, or onion flakes, for texture. You can also use garlic flakes.
- Onion Powder and Garlic Powder: We like a combination of both. Feel free to adapt the amount of onion or garlic depending on how strong a flavor you prefer.
- Salt and Pepper: Sea salt, kosher salt, or pink Himalayan salt are the best choices for this seasoning blend. You’ll also want to use freshly coarse ground black pepper for the best taste.
- Ground Mustard: Ground mustard is our “secret” ingredient that rounds out the other spices. You’ll taste the difference!
How to Make Hamburger Seasoning
There’s really no rhyme or reason here. All you need to do is combine your seasoning ingredients and mix well. You can do this with a bowl and a whisk, or you can use our favorite method: chuck the spices into a glass jar with a lid and give them a good shake.
How to Season a Burger
We use this seasoning to bring the best flavors out in our homemade burgers. We like to add some of the seasoning mix to the burger meat, then we coat the patties on both sides with more seasoning before cooking. Voila! Perfectly seasoned burgers, all summer long.
You can even use this seasoning to take store-bought or frozen burger patties to the next level. Just press it into the outside before cooking! It’s also delicious on chicken burgers, turkey burgers, salmon burgers, and veggie burgers.
Cook’s Notes
- Keep the saltiness in check. We use coarse sea salt, which is milder than table salt. If you’re using regular table salt, you’ll only need about ½ teaspoon since it’s saltier. Adjust the saltiness of your seasoning blend depending on what tastes good to you.
- Use coarse ground black pepper. You’ll want to stick with spices that hold up well at high temperatures. The coarser the grind, the better the pepper will hold up to the heat. Freshly ground pepper also has a stronger flavor.
- Spice it up. If you like your burgers with a little heat, go ahead and mix in a teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes or add a pinch of cayenne pepper for more heat.
- Store your burger seasoning airtight. See below. Proper storage is the key to having fresh burger seasoning on hand for a while!
How To Store
Properly stored in an airtight container, in a cool and dry pantry, this homemade burger seasoning will retain it’s flavor for a whole year! We like to store ours in the freezer, where it stays fresh even longer.
