Homemade Ranch Seasoning

Making your own homemade ranch seasoning takes just a few minutes, saves money, and is healthier without any additives or preservatives. This 5-minute recipe is way better than anything you’ll find in the store!

Why You’ll Love This Homemade Ranch Seasoning

Why make your own homemade ranch seasoning when you can buy it at the store? Here’s why:

  • Quick and easy. This entire recipe takes 5 minutes at most. All you do is add ingredients to a jar and shake. That’s about as fast and as easy as cooking ever gets!
  • Better than store-bought. We love ranch seasoning and ranch dressing, but the kind you buy at the store is a little duller in flavor. The herbs and spices are so flavorful and fresh. If you thought you liked ranch before, wait until you try this recipe.
  • No preservatives or MSG. Making this seasoning mix at home means you are in complete control of exactly what is – and what is not – added to your ranch seasoning.
  • Many different uses. You can use it to make ranch dressing, dip, as a marinade, or in so many different ranch flavored recipes. You can also use it as a seasoning mix for vegetables!
  • Save money. If you use ranch seasoning often, you will save money making your own in bulk. Those little packets add up if you are grabbing them at the store often!

How to Make Ranch Seasoning

Here’s how to make your own ranch seasoning in only 5 minutes. It’s such an easy recipe.

  • Add the ingredients. Place all of the recipe ingredients in a mason jar, and put the lid on.
  • Mix it up. Shake the mason jar until the ingredients are well combined. That’s it, you’re done!

Tips For the Best Ranch Seasoning

Here are a few tricks and tips to help you make this easy spice mixture.

  • Use freshly-dried herbs. While dried herbs don’t technically go bad, they do become stale and lose some of their flavor and become more mild. Make sure to use herbs that have been purchased recently and not ones that have been sitting at the bottom of your spice rack collecting dust.
  • Grind the seasoning. I usually leave my ranch seasoning nice and coarse, like in the pictures. If you want to make it like the ranch packets at the store, or you want your ranch dressing to be super smooth, then you’ll need to grind the seasoning into a finer powder. You can do this in a spice grinder or with a mortar and pestle
  • Shake before using. Sometimes the herbs and spices in this homemade ranch seasoning can separate over time because some of the ingredients are heavier than others. So make sure to give the mason jar another good shake every time you’re going to use the seasoning.

Serving Suggestions

It probably goes without saying, but we love to use ranch seasoning to make ranch! I mix it with mayonnaise and yogurt to make a ranch dip that’s perfect for wings and veggies. You can also mix it with mayonnaise, buttermilk, and sour cream to make a ranch dressing that’s amazing on salads.

You can also use it as spice rub for chicken, or mixed into mashed potatoes to give them a surprisingly delicious ranch flavor. Here are a few more recipes that use ranch seasoning:

How to Store Ranch Seasoning

Always store your homemade ranch dressing mix in an airtight container. If you used buttermilk powder, store the container in the fridge, where it will last for 2 months. If you didn’t use buttermilk powder, you can store the seasoning in a cupboard or spice rack, away from direct sunlight, for up to a year.
