Key Ingredients

Fragrant garlic and parsley are butter’s best friend in any spread recipe. Below you will find helpful notes for key ingredients used to make this garlic butter spread recipe. Scroll down to the recipe card for full ingredient list and exact amounts!

  • Olive Oil: Feel free to use avocado oil if preferred, but this is an important addition to make sure your butter stays easily spreadable.
  • Parsley: Fresh parsley is best, but you can experiment with other herbs like chives or tarragon.
  • Garlic: For the very BEST flavor, use freshly minced garlic only! If you’re a big garlic lover, you can always add more to taste. I usually double the amount of garlic since we love it so much!
  • Garlic Salt: You can swap it for garlic powder if you use salted butter in the recipe.

How To Make Garlic Butter Spread

If you don’t want to whip it by hand, use a hand-mixer. Below is a quick recipe overview, but please scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post for full instructions.

  • Whip it: Whip the butter in a bowl until light and fluffy. If it clumps together, it’s not softened enough.
  • Season it: Mix in the olive oil, parsley, garlic, and garlic salt until well combined. Taste and add more garlic or garlic salt, if needed to taste.
  • Serve: Transfer it to a small serving bowl. Spread it on toasty bread or on sliced bread and then toast it and enjoy!

Cook’s Tips & Variations

  • Add spices: Add 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1/4 teaspoon dried mustard, and 1 teaspoon onion powder for more savoriness.
  • Make it herbier: Rosemary, oregano, basil, and even dill can all be added to your butter. Remember if using dried herbs, they are much more powerful than fresh.
  • Crank up the heat: Add 1-2 tablespoons finely chopped jalapeños or serranos for a spicy kick. You can also use cayenne pepper!
  • Honey garlic: Stir in up to 1/4 cup honey to create a sweet and savory honey garlic butter spread. It’s also great with some crushed red pepper flakes stirred in!
  • Add texture: Stir in 1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts or sliced green onions for some added crunch.
  • Make compound butter: Spread the leftovers on a piece of plastic wrap. Roll it up and twist the edges to create a “log” of butter. Refrigerate until firm. Slice when ready to use.

How to Serve Garlic Butter Spread

This garlic butter spread is great over toasty baguette slices or used to make garlic bread. You can also spread it on my sweet potato cornbread, classic cornbread, or your favorite sandwich bread. My beer bread recipe and cornbread waffles are other great options. Drizzle it with a bit of hot honey for even more flavor!

We also use it spread on top of proteins before serving to boost the flavor. It’s great spread over our favorite cast iron steak right before serving!
