Creamy Tajin Sauce

This tangy and creamy tajin sauce adds a burst of flavor to tacos and is the perfect dip for all your favorite snacks and appetizers. Sour cream and mayo provide a rich, creamy base, perfectly balanced with spicy sriracha, tangy lime, and Tajin.

Why I Love This CreamySauce

I’ve always been a fan of bold flavors and have been finding all kinds of new ways to use Tajin. I was whipping up a batch of our favorite shrimp tacos, when I wondered about adding Tajin to my taco sauce. I skipped the chipotle pepper and cilantro, but kept the base the same with added Tajin and sriracha hot sauce. We couldn’t stop going back for more! This creamy sauce is SO GOOD, we keep trying to find new ways to serve it so we can have it again. Here’s why I think you will love it too:

  • Quick: Make it fresh or in advance, this recipe only takes 10 minutes. It also couldn’t be any simpler to make, just stir everything together!
  • Versatile: Add it to air fryer fried pickles, street corn, fries, burgers, and it’s extra delicious drizzled on tacos! This versatile sauce is the perfect garlicky condiment to elevate just about any dish.
  • Tangy and Spicy: The lime juice and Tajin add a refreshing tang, while the sriracha provides a pleasant heat. The combination of creamy, tangy, and spicy elements makes each bite exciting.

What Is Tajin?

Tajin is a brand-name Mexican chili-lime powder. It’s made with a variety of dried chilis, citric acid, and a bit of salt. It has a very tangy flavor and is subtly spicy. There are also different types of Tajin with various levels of heat, ranging from mild to habanero-hot.

Key Ingredients

Below you will find helpful notes for key ingredients used to make this easy tajin sauce. Scroll down to the recipe card for full ingredient list and exact amounts!

  • Tajin: I tested this recipe with a few different swaps people recommend for Tajin, but the sauce always fell flat. You really need to use Tajin to get that slightly spicy and tangy flavor!
  • Garlic: Freshly minced garlic, or garlic paste, are best for the most garlic taste. I avoid garlic powder because it can make the sauce grainy and it is also not as potent.
  • Siracha: You can also add your favorite hot sauce, or add a pinch of cayenne pepper instead.

How To Make Tajin Sauce

This creamy Mexican sauce is a one-bowl recipe… Just stir and enjoy! Below is a quick recipe overview, but please scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post for full instructions

  • Mix everything: Whisk all of the ingredients in a bowl. Refrigerate sauce in an airtight container until ready to serve.

Cook’s Tips & Variations

  • Hold the salt: Tajin already has salt in it, this is why this sauce recipe doesn’t have any. Don’t add extra salt until after you’ve tried the sauce and then adjust the seasoning if needed.
  • Avocado-tajin sauce: Blend 1/2-1 small pitted avocado into the sauce for a creamier, earthier flavor. Keep in mind, this will change the color of your sauce and make it go bad quicker.
  • Cilantro: You can also add a handful of fresh cilantro for a bright, herby touch.
  • Keep it mild: Only add 1 teaspoon Tajin to the recipe. Skip the Sriracha. Do a taste test and add more Tajin as needed.
  • Add chipotle: To add more flavor and heat, consider adding this sauce to a food processor or blender with a chipotle pepper in adobo sauce for a smoky, spicy twist.
  • Make it lighter: You can swap the sour cream for plain Greek yogurt for a lighter version, but keep the mayo for creaminess.

Notes

Store: Place sauce in an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 7 days. Serve it straight out of the fridge or at room temperature. If a thin film develops on top, scoop it off with a spoon. I do not recommend freezing this sauce as the mayo and sour cream base can separate and become watery once thawed.
