Why You’ll Love This Honey Mustard Recipe

We always have a jar of honey mustard sauce sitting in my fridge, and believe us when we say that it disappears quickly! Here’s why you’ve got to try this recipe:

  • Quick & Easy: Honey mustard sauce seems like something that would be a hassle to make, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. You won’t believe how easy this recipe is to make! It only uses ingredients that you probably already have on hand and it takes just 5 minutes to make.
  • Better than Store-Bought: If you love honey mustard, then I have good news for you! This recipe is so much better than anything you’ll buy at the store. It’s fresher, tangier, and has a lot more flavor because it uses 2 different kinds of mustard, fresh lemon juice, and just the right amount of honey to keep it well balanced.
  • Adjustable: One reason that I make a lot of homemade sauces is because it’s so easy to adjust them to fit our taste buds. You can adjust this recipe to fit your palate, or you can change it to best go with whatever you’re serving it with. Want it sweeter? Add more honey! Want it spicy? Add a pinch of cayenne!
  • Impressive: Honey mustard sauce is not a dip that most people think of making. So when you tell people that they’ve got to try your homemade honey mustard, they’ll be so impressed. And once they taste it, they’ll be blown away because it tastes *so* much better than the store bought versions!

  • Mayonnaise: You can use Greek yogurt for a healthier honey mustard dressing if you prefer, but it will be a little tangier.
  • Honey
  • Dijon Mustard: Stone ground mustard will also work well as long as it’s not too coarse.
  • Yellow Mustard
  • Lemon Juice: Apple cider vinegar works as a substitute.
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Paprika: We used regular paprika, but if you want a smoky flavor, use smoked paprika!
  • Salt

Tips For the Best Honey Mustard Sauce

Here are a few tricks and variations for you to try when you make this homemade honey mustard.

  • Adjust the Flavors: One of the best things about this recipe is that you can adjust the flavors based on what you like. For instance, if you want a honey mustard sauce that’s less spicy and tangy, use less Dijon mustard. If you like a sweeter dip, add a little more honey. If you want something a little richer and milder to spread on sandwiches, add more mayo. Make this recipe whatever you want it to be!
  • Rest: If you have the time, make this recipe a few hours before you plan to use it, and let it rest in the fridge. The longer you let this honey mustard recipe sit, the more the flavors will blend together. Letting the dip rest also gives the garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika more time to fully dissolve, so the sauce will be smoother.
  • Fresh Lemon Juice: We always use freshly-squeezed lemon juice in recipes. The flavor is just so much better than bottled lemon juice.
  • Make it Spicy: We love spicy foods! If you do too, then we recommend making a spicy honey mustard dip by adding a little ground cayenne to it. Add anywhere from a tiny pinch to ½ teaspoon, depending on how spicy you want it. A little sriracha is also a great option to add heat.

Yes, you can freeze this honey mustard recipe. Put it in an airtight container, and it will last in the freezer for 6 months. Thaw the sauce overnight in the fridge before eating. The dip might separate a little bit as it thaws, but you can fix that by whisking it again.
